Cooking a good meal starts with buying the groceries. The same principle is true for translations. Before work starts, I need to find out what your needs are. Who is your intended audience? Where is the translation going? On what medium will the translation be presented?
Once these questions are answered, Apropos reviews the master document to see if there is any special terminology specific to the industry or company that needs to be clarified. Time and money can be saved by compiling a glossary of terms, acronyms, idioms, and phrases at the earliest possible stage of the translation process. The glossary can be entered into a translation memory to ensure that all translations for this particular client are based on the same requirements.
A first draft of the translation is then created. At this point, the client may choose to send the translation to their internal representative for review. Again, terminology for a product or service might differ from one company to another. I want to be certain that translations are consistent from one project to the next.
If layout is necessary, the translation will be formatted to fit the specifications and style of the original.
The final version is delivered by e-mail or through FTP in ready-to-print layouts. Apropos caters to all standard file formats for such applications as Microsoft Word (doc), Microsoft Excel (xls), Microsoft PowerPoint (ppt), Adobe Acrobat (pdf), Wordperfect (wpd), and HTML, as well as translation memory software applications such as Trados and SDLX.
Additionally, Apropos translates and/or localizes graphics within documents and files. Although the majority of translation projects are handled electronically, I gladly accept traditional hardcopy orders as well. Please see my minimum daily output for information about volumes and deadlines.
